Online Blackjack: Rules, Payouts and Important Variations

Learn online blackjack basics, hit/stand/double/split decisions, natural blackjack payouts and rule differences that affect the house edge.

The objective of blackjack

In ordinary blackjack, the player aims to finish with a hand total closer to 21 than the dealer without exceeding 21. Number cards generally count their face value, face cards count ten, and an ace may count as one or eleven according to the hand. A two-card ace plus a ten-value card is usually called a natural blackjack, subject to the table's exact rules.

Unlike slots or roulette, some blackjack outcomes depend on player decisions, but correct decisions cannot guarantee a win or remove the house edge.

Common actions at the table

  • Hit: Request another card.
  • Stand: Keep your current total.
  • Double: Increase the initial wager under house rules, usually receiving one additional card.
  • Split: Divide a qualifying pair into two hands by placing an additional wager.
  • Surrender: Where offered, end the hand under a specified partial-loss rule.

The operator's rules determine when actions are permitted and how hands are settled.

Why 3:2 versus 6:5 matters

A natural blackjack paid at 3:2 returns $15 in winnings on a $10 stake, while a 6:5 payout returns $12 in winnings on that same $10 stake. The $3 difference applies whenever that natural-blackjack award occurs under the corresponding rule. Both still include return of the original stake when the wager wins.

With otherwise similar rules, a lower natural-blackjack payout is less favorable to the player. Nevada-approved blackjack variants explicitly include configurations using both payout structures; always check the actual table before wagering.

Other rules that change the game

Check whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17, whether doubling is allowed after splitting, how many decks are used, whether re-splitting is permitted, and whether surrender or side bets exist. Side bets have their own paytables and probabilities; they should not be treated as part of the main blackjack wager.

A table labeled "blackjack" is not proof that it follows every familiar rule. Read the specific game rules and settlement procedures.

A safer rule-review example

Suppose two tables have different natural-blackjack payouts but otherwise appear similar. Reading the payout line is more informative than selecting the table with the most dramatic visuals. Equally, knowing the dealer soft-17 rule and allowed player actions matters more than a promotional image. This is an educational comparison, not a betting system or profit claim.
